Something strange happened to Devonworth the moment he looked outside the carriage window the next night and saw his wife approaching. His breath caught and there was an odd sensation in his chest. He might have lied to himself and chalked it up to indigestion, but he had barely had time to eat all day what with the endless meetings that had started early that morning.

It was the first time he’d seen her since last night when she had walked in on him pleasuring himself to thoughts of her. That wasn’t even the worst of it. He’d invited her to participate like some uncivilized cretin.

What did one say to the woman after that? Especially when it had appeared as if she’d enjoyed every single moment of it. Until the end. It was only as she’d slammed the door behind her that he realized he might have read the entire situation wrong.

But that didn’t completely explain it, because tonight wasn’t the first night he had experienced the strange sensations. They had been a nearly constant occurrence. The switch had happened around the time they had faked the consummation of their marriage. Every night that he went to her and they worked on his speech, he’d felt something like anticipation beforehand. While he was in her room, he was aware of her in a way that made it almost impossible to concentrate on the bloody speech.

Her expression was unreadable as she dashed down the front steps. Her hair was in an elegant roll, and the dark blue silk of her skirts peeked out from the bottom of her cloak. He shifted as she approached, adjusting his coat and wishing he’d taken a moment to straighten his hair before he’d rushed out of his office. Beckham had sent a note to her earlier in the day to remind her of the dinner they were having out tonight. Devonworth himself had not had any contact with her all day. He was half-afraid he’d become aroused at the mere sight of her now, and half-convinced she’d never want to see him again.

The door opened and a footman helped her inside. She didn’t make eye contact right away, but instead set about arranging her skirts on the seat across from him. Her fresh lavender scent teased his nostrils and sent a thrill of interest down through his groin. His cock remembered everything, even if he wished to forget last night had happened. He cleared his throat and held out the carriage blanket for her, which she wordlessly accepted.

“Good evening, Cora.”

“Good evening.” She cast her gaze somewhere around the vicinity of his shoulder.

“I’m sorry to be late. I was detained unavoidably. Thank you for joining me.”

“It’s no bother,” she said, her voice strained.

She hated him. Was likely sickened by him. Her disdain didn’t stop him from noticing that she was almost unbearably pretty tonight. Though her hair wasn’t down as he preferred it, the meager carriage light cast a burnished glow to the pinned curls. Her cheeks were rosy, and there was a certain glow about her.
